COMMENT ON RAFFAELE D’AMBRA AND THE RESTORATION OF THE SOCIETY

INTEGRAL  REPRODUCION OF THE VOLUME BY RAFFAELE D’AMBRA, NAPLES

IN 1989 THE  PRESS IGNORED THE CENTENARY OF “NAPLES OF ANCIENT TIMES”. NOT EVEN ONE  HISTORIAN REMEMBERED THIS IMPORTANT EDITORIAL WORK WHICH IS CONNECTED TO THE RESTORATION OF NAPLES. ALL OF THEM INCLUDING  JOURNALISTS, POLITICIANS AND URBANISTS WERE  INTENT ON DISCUSSING THE FUTURE OF NAPLES. THAT IS WHY I AM WRITING ABOUT RAFFAELE D’AMBRA  ON THE CENTENARY OF HIS DEATH (1892) BOTH BECAUSE  I AM A MEMBER  OF THE PONTENIANA ACCADEMY  AND ALSO TO ADHERE TO  THE REQUEST OF MY FRIEND FRANCO DI MAURO. IT IS NOT A “RE-DISCOVERY” OR A “REVIVAL” OF “NAPLES OF ANCIENT TIMES” BUT A REPRINT  IN MEMORY OF RAFFAELE D’AMBRA ON THE ANNIVERSARY OF HIS DEATH  A HUNDRED  YEARS AGO. A BOOK WHICH ENVOKES IN THE NEAPOLITAN  PEOPLE A STRONG FEELING OF BELONGING AS EACH PAGE IS TURNED AND THE EYE  FALLS ON MONUMENTS, ENVIRONMENTS AND LONG LOST ITINERIES.
